Scam warning

Fake Worker at the Door

A person in a vest or uniform says they're from the water company, power company or the city and need to come inside to check something. While one person keeps you busy, another may steal from your home.

Also called: Distraction burglary, Fake utility worker, Impostor worker

The one thing to remember

Don't let anyone in who you weren't expecting. Call the company first, using the number on your bill.

How it happens

  1. Someone knocks, saying there's a water leak, a gas problem, or a meter to check.
  2. They may wear a vest, a badge, or carry a clipboard.
  3. They ask you to come to the back yard or run the tap in the kitchen.
  4. Meanwhile a second person slips in and takes cash, jewelry or medicine.

Warning signs

  • A visit you didn't schedule.
  • Urgent safety claims, like “There's a gas leak, we need to come in now.”
  • Two or more people, where one distracts you.
  • No photo ID, or they won't wait while you call to check.

What to do

  • Keep the door locked and talk through it.
  • Ask for ID, then call the company yourself to check. A real worker will wait.
  • If something feels wrong, call your local police.
  • If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911.
