Scam warning

“Free” Medical Alert Device

A robocall says you, a loved one, or a friend ordered a free medical alert device (the button you press if you fall), or that you qualify for free hearing aids or a brace. It's not free. They want your card, Medicare or bank details.

Also called: Medical alert scam, Free hearing aid scam, Life alert robocall

The one thing to remember

Nothing is free if they need your card or Medicare number. Hang up and ask your doctor about devices you really need.

How it happens

  1. A recording says a medical alert device has been paid for by a friend or family member.
  2. You press a button to “confirm your shipping”.
  3. They ask for your card number for a small fee, or for your Medicare number.
  4. You get billed monthly, or your information is sold or used for fraud.

Warning signs

  • A free device you didn't ask for.
  • Being told a family member already paid for it.
  • Being asked for card, bank or Medicare details.

What to do

  • Hang up. Don't press any buttons.
  • If you want a medical alert device, ask your doctor or family to help pick a well-known company.
  • Check your Medicare statements for things you didn't get.
